About Camillus

Camillus, NY, named after the Roman General Marcus Furius Camillus, is a quaint town located near the city of Syracuse. Founded in 1799, Camillus is a wonderful community.

The first white settler, Isaac Lindsay, arrived in the area in 1790. Later he brought on his brothers James, William, and Elijah. The men found large deposits of gypsum in the area which later led to the development of a large, new industry. The addition of the Erie Canal brought more prosperity and business to the area. Further transportation advancements continued, such as railroads in the 1830s, trolley cars in 1909, and an airport in 1925.
