Syracuse History

Europeans first saw the Syracuse area when French missionaries arrived in the area around the 1600s. The Onondaga Nations, a member of the Iroquois confederacy, invited a group of Jesuit priests, soldiers, and coureurs des bois to set up a mission known as the Sainte Marie among the Iroquois on the shore of the Onondaga Lake. The city rose to fame when salt production began in the area due to the high amounts of salty brine springs from the late 1700s through the 1900s. To this day, Syracuse is colloquially known as the “Salt City”.

Syracuse is served by the Syracuse City School District which contains 30 schools and over 19,000 students. In addition, Syracuse is home to several colleges and universities which provide ample opportunity to obtain higher education. Syracuse University, the city’s biggest and most notable university, enrolls around 21,500 students.
